Port Chester DPW Boss Quits Amid Parking Meter Scandal

Port Chester's head of the Department of Public Works has resigned.

Gary Racaniello was suspended without pay earlier this month after officials alleged that  he and other DPW employees pocketed  cash from the village's parking meters and machines.

An investigation by the Village revealed the possible scheme after discovering that it took in less parking revenue than it typically averages.

Authorities say about 100 meters showed signs of being tampered with. Parking meters in the Village typically take in about $500,000 in revenue annually. Numbers in July were considerably less than normal, officials say.

Since the suspected theft of meter revenue, Port Chester has installed dozens of new digital parking meters, which are said to be more tamper-proof.

Racaniello may still face criminal charges in the probe which is being conducted by the Westchester County District Attorney's office as well as local police.
