Latimer Bill Seeks to Give Local Governments "Naming Rights"

As local governments across the state are looking for ways to fund government services without raising property taxes, Assemblyman George Latimer (D-Westchester,91 A.D.) is sponsoring a bill that would give local villages, towns, cities and counties greater flexibility in leasing naming rights for government-owned facilities in return for money.

Under current laws, local governments are restricted in the ways they can approach a corporation or an individual to lease such rights. The bill allows for leases of no less than one year and no greater than five years. Said Latimer, "In these difficult economic times, we have to think like a business to get through this fiscal crisis."
The bill is sponsored in the State Senate by Senator Craig Johnson (D-Nassau County) and is currently under consideration in the Local Government Committees of each house.
