Rye Brook Woman Charged With DWI Under Leandra's Law After Taconic Crash

State Police say a Rye Brook woman was arrested on December 31 following a one car accident on the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of East Fishkill. 

Troopers say they arrived on the scene to find 37 year old Suji Alexander-Raja of Rye Brook standing outside the vehicle with her 6 year old daughter after she apparently had gone off the roadway and struck a guiderail.

Police say they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and after she allegedly failed field sobriety tests was found to have a blood alcohol level (BAC) of .32%-four times the legal limit. 

Alexander-Raja was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra's Law and unsafe lane change. She was arraigned in the Town of East Fishkill Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail  in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

State Police have arrested a Middletown woman and charged her with DWI under Leandra's Law for allegedly driving drunk with kids in the car on the Sprain Brook Parkway.

Cortlandt Man Charged With Driving Drunk With Kids in the Car

State Police in Cortlandt say they arrested a Cortlandt Manor man for allegedly driving drunk with several kids in the car. According to police, Randy Gordineer was stopped on Route 6 on Saturday August 14 in the Town of Cortlandt for a traffic infraction when the trooper determined that the driver appeared to be intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with Felony DWI under Leandra's Law, after they determined he had a blood alcohol level  of .15%.

Troopers say Gordineer was operating the vehicle with a total of five kids as passengers, two of his own and 3 grandchildren, ranging in age from 2 to 14. Police also say there was a sober adult riding in the front seat of the car.

Gordineer was arraigned and remanded to the Westchester County Jail on $10,000 bail. He is due back in Cortlandt Town court on August 16.

Gordineer's arrest came just one day before a new component of Leandra's Law took effect in which anyone convicted of driving drunk with kids under the age of 16 in the car must install a special ignition interlock  system in any car he/she drives. The offender would then breathe into the device before going behind the wheel and depending on its reading, it could prevent the vehicle from starting if the driver is intoxicated.  The ignition interlock system costs roughly $200 to install and about $80 a month as a monthly maintenance fee.

Yorktown Man Charged with Felony DWI Under Leandra's Law

State Police have this weekend arrested a Yorktown man after a state trooper noticed a 2000 Toyota sienna mini-van with a flat tire traveling southbound on the shoulder of the Taconic State Parkway near Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley.

Somers Man Arrested For Felony DWI

Richard. H. AritaState Police say a Somers man is under arrest, charged with felony DWI under Leandra's law after allegedly driving drunk with kids under the age of 15 in his car.

According to police, 53 year old Richard H. Arita was stopped while driving in Somers around 1:34 a.m. Sunday for a traffic violation.

Police later suspected he was intoxicated and say Arita was placed under arrest for DWI after failing a sobriety test indicating he had a blood alcohol level of .13%.

Cops say in the vehicle with Arita were his wife, 51 year old Sherry Arita, their 14 year old son and 11 year old daughter as well as a 12
year old family friend.
